Study suggests that high risk births are more risky at home than in a hospital.

Author of “After Miscarriage” discusses new study that links home birth with increased rate of stillbirths.

In her latest column for About.com, Krissi Danielsson discusses a recent study examining the occurrence of stillbirths in high-risk home births versus hospital births. Krissi explores the reasons why this number is so high, concluding that there is a significant difference in study results when dealing with high-risk pregnancies versus “normal” pregnancies. She writes:

I was concerned at first reading the headline of the article, which did not include the qualifier about high risk pregnancies. It seems to make sense that in high risk pregnancies it makes the most sense to have a hospital birth where there is a good amount of help readily available should complications arise, so that finding was not surprising… I do think it should be reassuring, however, that the rates of stillbirth in home births for pregnancies not labeled high risk was not significantly higher than the rate of stillbirth in hospital births.

Krissi is the author of After Miscarriage: Medical Facts and Emotional Support for Pregnancy Loss (HCP, 2008) and writes about the emotional and physical struggles of miscarriage for About.com.  Check out our author’s article here, and share your thoughts!
