It’s A…??? Swedish Couple Refuses to Reveal Gender of their 2-Year Old Child

Wednesday July 8, 2009A very intriguing story straight out of Stockholm: a Swedish couple refuses to let anyone (beyond close relatives) know the gender of their 2-year-old toddler. In an attempt to protect their child from gender-bias, these parents are keeping the sex a secret by dressing “Pop” in both dresses and male-inspired pants outfits. The Internet is all a-Twitter (literally) over the couple’s decision. Lisa Belkin of Motherlode seems to regard the couple’s decision with curiosity, while Babycenter’s Momformation tells the parents to “consider saving for therapy bills now because this sounds like a nightmare in the works.” On the one hand, there are questions of practicality such as, “What bathroom does the child use? How long before nature inevitably begins to reveal his/her gender?” On the other hand, this “experiment” of sorts is incredibly intriguing. How liberating it must be to be free of social constraints, and to simply exist as a happy, healthy, gender-neutral kid!
What would you say to these parents? Are they helping or harming their child? Does knowing whether or not a kid is a boy or a girl affect how you interact with them? What advice would you give the couple?
