What Would You Do With A Cocktail Onion?

Over at A.J. Rathbun’s Spiked Punch blog, our man in Seattle has a problem… too many cocktail onions. You see, he bought a big bottle of Saucy Mama cocktail onions to use in a Gibson, which is a close relative of the Martini. Actually, it essentially is a Martini with a cocktail onion in it instead of an olive. But now he doesn’t know what to do with the rest of his onions. As he writes in his latest blog post:

Even with my Gibson love, I’m not sure I’ll use up the whole bottle of onions anytime soon. I could have a Gibson party (that might be fun), but I thought it’d also be fun to ask out there if anyone, anywhere, knows another delicious cocktail that features the cocktail onion?

Let’s help him out! Post your best recipes that use cocktail onions here, or over at Spiked Punch, and the best one will receive a free copy of A.J.’s brand new, soon-to-be-classic book, Dark Spirits. Maybe if we give him good ideas, we’ll get invited to that Gibson party.

To get those creative juices flowing, here is A.J.’s Gibson recipe, taken from his earlier book Good Spirits:

The Gibson

Ingredients:

Ice cubes

2-1/2 ounces gin

1/2 ounce dry vermouth

1 or 2 cocktail onions for garnish

Directions:

1. Fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass halfway full with ice cubes. Add the gin and dry vermouth. Stir well.

2. Add one or two cocktail onions to a cocktail glass. Strain the mix over the onions.

A Note: This delivers a classically-sized 3-ounce cocktail, the perfect amount for you to drink it, as the saying goes, “while it’s laughing at you.”
